Geneva ‘08: Bentley Zagato GTZ

bentley-continental-gtz_1.jpg

A few months back, Italian coachbuilder Zagato announced it was working on a project with Bentley. Yet, no details ever surfaced, until now.

The Zagato-designed Bentley will be based off the Continental GT Speed – to be called the Bentley Zagato GTZ. We don’t have the details of what Zagato may have done under the hood, but the front fascia has a new design – maybe a Veyron-inspired grille.

We’ll let you in on all the details next week at the Geneva Motor Show.

Mitsubishi will Bring Lancer Sportback to the U.S.

mitsubishi-lancer-prototype-s-9hl.jpg

Mitsubishi has released a document today that outlines the company’s plans on a global level for the next couple of years. While the rather long press release contains, we’re sure, many and varied interesting pieces of news, our eyes first strayed to the North America portion of the “Regional Strategies” section. That paragraph reads in part,

The company will also expand sales by, for example, marketing the new model of the Lancer Evolution released in January 2008 and adding a sport hatchback Lancer model hereafter.

Which is great news for those of us who’ve been crossing our fingers for a U.S. version of the tidy Prototype-S concept Mitsubishi is bringing to Geneva next week. Subaru of America may just have a fight on its hands.

Mitsubishi Motors Announces Mid-Term Business Plan: “Step Up 2010″

Tokyo, February 29, 2008 - Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) today announced a new mid-term business plan, called Step Up 2010, for fiscal years 2008 through 2010 (ending March 31, 2011).

1. Recap of the Mitsubishi Motors Business Revitalization Plan
Having announced the Mitsubishi Motors Business Revitalization Plan on January 28, 2005, the company has been working on various measures toward revitalization based on the two pillars of recovering trust and restoring earnings. On the matter of trust, it has strived to improve employees’ awareness, strengthen its quality management system, and create a thoroughly customer-centered culture. These achievements have all received favorable evaluations from the Business Ethics Committee, an external advisory body to the board of directors and chaired by Mr. Noboru Matsuda, consisting of experts and specialists. On the matter of earnings, the company now expects to achieve its fiscal 2007 target of solid profitability, and has, through an emphasis on “selection and focus”:

(1) Reduced development of regionally specific vehicles and expanded development of global vehicles;
(2) Rationalized overseas production;
(3) Strengthened domestic sales networks;
(4) Expanded collaborative alliances.

2. Performance targets
(Units: Thousands of units, 100 million yen)
FY2010 Target FY2007 Forecast
Sales volume(retail) 1,422 1,337
Net sales 27,600 26,700
Operating profit 900 800
Ordinary profit 710 600
Net profit 500 200

Target sales volume (retail) in fiscal 2010 will be 1,422,000 units, on the back of growing markets such as Russia and Ukraine, as well as expanded sales in resource-rich areas such as the Middle East and Latin America. This exceeds by 85,000 units the fiscal 2007 forecast of 1,337,000 units. Increased sales including an increased percentage of built-up vehicles will yield sales of 2 trillion, 760 billion yen. In turn, the company expects 90 billion yen in operating profit, 71 billion yen in ordinary profit, and 50 billion yen in net profit.

3. Policy
“Stepping up” from the Revitalization Plan to a new stage in which the company will build a base for sustainable growth, Mitsubishi Motors will seek to do the following, through a basic policy of “bolstering strengths and securing steady profits”:

(1) Provide competitive products in its “focus” markets (see below) and increase unit volumes
(2) Ensure steady profits through cost reductions and improved profitability in after-sales
(3) Improve efficiency of its global production operations in line with its sales strategy
(4) R&D for leading-edge environmental technology
(5) Invest in areas that will provide a base for sustainable growth

4. Business Strategy
(1) Product strategy
1) Development of global products that reflect both financial and environmental responsibility
2) Focus on minicars and small cars, medium-sized cars, and SUVs
3) In the area of environmental technology, in addition to upgrading its current technologies, the company will concentrate on the development of core technologies, including emphasis on the development of clean diesel engines and the high-efficiency automated manual transmission Twin Clutch SST (Sport Shift Transmission).
4) Representing the pinnacle of MMC’s environmental technology, the company will release the next-generation electric vehicle i MiEV, which is currently under development, ahead of competitors in the marketplace.

(2) New Product Launch Plan
1) Expand number of mid-size platform models
2) Add an SUV based on the one-ton pickup
3) Add small, ‘lower-impact’ SUV
4) Adapt minicars for overseas use, add global models
5) Bring an electric vehicle to world markets

(3) Regional strategies

1) Japan
Mitsubishi Motors aims to be operating in the black in its domestic operations by fiscal 2010, by improving business efficiency in addition to adhering to a focus on profitable sales. It will improve the profitability of new vehicles by marketing distinctive products, implementing measures to strengthen sales capabilities across the country while improving the percentage of dealership sales, and by working to increase customer satisfaction. It will also improve the efficiency of its sales network, including by streamlining back-offices.

2) North America
Mitsubishi Motors will further strengthen trust between the company and its dealers and make concerted efforts with dealers in providing service to customers, as well as working to improve the brand image in the mid- to long term. The company will also expand sales by, for example, marketing the new model of the Lancer Evolution released in January 2008 and adding a sport hatchback Lancer model hereafter. Best use will be made of the local production plant in the U.S. through continued efforts at overall cost-cutting, including fixed costs, and by expanding export opportunities.

3) Europe (Western and Central Europe)
In the mature Western European market, Mitsubishi Motors will address environmental awareness and tightening CO2 emissions regulations by promoting environmental technologies and compact vehicles. At the same time, in the expanding Central European market, it will strive to increase sales with a focus on SUVs.

4) “Focus” markets
- In Russia and the Ukraine, Mitsubishi Motors will aim to further expand sales by increasing the number of its sales outlets, enhancing its SUV lineup and other measures. It is also considering possible local production in Russia for the import tax benefits such an arrangement would offer.
- In the Middle East, a company will be established to integrate all functions - sales, marketing, parts and after-sales service; and to strengthen comprehensive sales support.
- In Brazil, new products and variations of SUVs will be added to local production. The company will also strive to increase sales by filling out its lineup of full-range (0%-100% gasoline / bioethanol-compatible) flexible fuel vehicles (FFV).
- In China, the company will strengthen sales networks for Mitsubishi brand vehicles, including those locally produced by South East Motor Co., Ltd.
- In India, Mitsubishi Motors will expand sales of locally produced vehicles including new model SUVs, as well as growing the sales network.

(4) Improved Efficiency in Global Production
In addition to transferring production of the Outlander for Europe from Japan to the European production base, preparations will be made to bring production of another Europe-bound SUV to the facility. In this way, sales opportunities will not be lost due to overcapacity at production facilities in Japan, paving the way to an efficient and more profitable production system responsive to increasing demand in the global market.

(5) Alliances
Mitsubishi Motors and Nissan Motor have agreed to strengthen their collaborative operations by adding a minicar model to their OEM business, and to pursue possible collaboration on development, production and OEM supply of light commercial vehicles for the Japanese and overseas markets. Mitsubishi Motors will positively promote tie-ups and cooperation in individual areas deemed to have sufficient merit in respect of supplementing products and technology and reducing costs.

(6) Measures to improve profitability
1) Process imrpovement
Mitsubishi Motors will aim to reduce costs by improving its ability to adjust supply in response to demand, and through comprehensive inventory management.
2) Strengthening after-sales service in mature markets
Expansion of peripheral businesses, including the promotion of service products to meet customer needs.
3) Strengthening cost-cutting measures from R&D onward
Mitsubishi Motors will establish a solid procurement foundation by strengthening internal cooperation among development, production and procurement departments, enhancing relationships with parts manufacturers, and by making every effort to achieve substantial cost reductions from the initial stage of development.

(7) Investment in areas that will provide a base for sustainable future growth
Capital investment will be focused on: the expanded development of models based on the mid-sized platform; on reducing environmental impact through measures such as the new paint facility at Okazaki; and on increasing production capacity.
R&D expenditures will be concentrated on “distinctively Mitsubishi” areas such as SUVs and the S-AWC (Super All Wheel Control) vehicle dynamics control system as well as environmental technologies.

(8) Other
1) Continuing and enhancing compliance and CSR activities
Placing top priority on corporate social responsibility (CSR), Mitsubishi Motors seeks, in addition to continuing conventional compliance and CSR activities, to move toward a prosperous and sustainable relationship with society. The company announces the establishment of a Corporate Citizenship Promotion Office as a first step in that direction.
2) Human resources strategy
Mitsubishi Motors will promote human resource development, the foundation of any growth strategy, and continue its tradition of car craftsmanship.

In Spain in February, press reps from Munich hauled us into a dark corner of a bar and told us that we could shoot both the Mini and Mini Clubman John Cooper Works versions prior to their Geneva show debuts. Original art of any hot pocket-rockets from Mini is too good to pass up, so we jumped at the chance.

Geneva Leakage: Remaining 2009 VW Scirocco pics surface

Click above image to view all new high-res shots of the VW Scirocco

As we say in the biz, you can’t put the toothpaste back in the tube, so you might as well squeeze out what’s left. After two official images of the yet-to-debut 2009 Volkswagen Scirocco hit the web the other day, a couple of sites have decided just to publish the whole lot of pre-release images. There are seven in total now (VW will likely release dozens more after the car debuts in Geneva next week), including a pair of interior pics that show, surprise, surprise, a cockpit that appears remarkably similar to the one in the Golf and Jetta. Despite that, the deeply bolstered tan leather seats are stitched with a nifty retro pattern that makes us want to crank the cassette player to 11. There’s more info about the 2009 Volkswagen Scirocco that we’d like to tell you, but it’s embargoed until Monday. It’s highly unlikely, however, that this tube of toothpaste won’t be squeezed dry by then.

eBay Auction of the Day: 1970 Porsche Skibob

skibobhl.jpg

For those of us who’ve always thought that the 912 or the 914 were some of the most unheralded members of the Porsche family, say hello to the 212 Skibob.

This small and collapsible skibob (basically a bike for the slopes) was built through collaboration by the Arvoa Company and Porsche design. Made in limited quantities for enthusiasts, the Porsche sled features a rather sophisticated setup (you know, for a skibob) of front and rear shock strut suspension. It’s also able to break apart, with the ski components stored inside of the hollow fiberglass body. Maybe most incredibly, despite its slight build, the 212 is made to carry two riders.

Without even touching the question of whether this should be listed outside of eBay Motors, we were rather surprised to learn that the starting bid for the 212 was a healthy $800. But the seller assures potential buyers that true enthusiasts are willing to pay more than double that. There’s only a bit of winter left folks, get to bidding.

Mercedes-Benz to be First in Utilizing Lithium-Ion in Series-Production

mercedes-bluetec.jpg

Mercedes-Benz is claiming they will have lithium-ion batteries in its upcoming S400 BlueHybrid that will go on sale in Europe by mid-2009, following to the U.S. by the third-quarter of 2009.

If Mercedes-Benz can keep to schedule, the S400 BlueHybrid gasoline-electric will be the first series-production car to rely on lithium-ion technology.

“What we have here is a groundbreaking key technology that is going to be a decisive factor for the future success of the automotive industry,” said Thomas Weber, head of Mercedes-Benz research and development.

(More details and press release after the jump)

The S400 BlueHybrid is powered by a 3.5-liter V-6 gasoline engine paired with a small electric motor. The car can deliver 299 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque, can do the 0-62 mph sprint in 7.3 seconds, and MB estimates it will achieve 29.7 mpg.

After the S400, Mercedes-Benz will release its second lithium-ion battery packed hybrid, the S300 BlueTec Hybrid. The S300 will feature the 2.2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine paired with the hybrid motor. MB says the powertrain will push 221 horsepower, 413 pound-feet of torque, and achieve a remarkable 43.6 mpg.

The lithium-ion battery pack will be supplied by Johnson Controls-Saft – which, recently, built a plant in Nersac, France to produce li-ion batteries for Mercedes.

Breakthrough in Battery Technology by Daimler

· First patented integration of a lithium-ion battery into a series-produced passenger car

· Available in Mercedes-Benz S 400 BlueHYBRID starting in 2009

· 25 patents for top technology “made in Germany”

Stuttgart - Daimler AG has achieved a crucial breakthrough in battery technology. The Stuttgart-based automaker is the world’s first manufacturer to have succeeded in adapting lithium-ion technology to the demanding requirements of automotive applications. Until now, the technology has been used primarily in consumer electronics. The new battery will be used in the series-production S 400 BlueHYBRID beginning next year. This important technology was possible thanks to 25 patents held by Daimler.

Dr. Thomas Weber, member of the Daimler AG Board of Management and responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development, says: “What we have here is a groundbreaking key technology that is going to be a decisive factor for the future success of the automotive industry. That is a tribute to our intensive research efforts, which we have been conducting in this area since 1992.”

The engineers’ success is above all a result of the Daimler-developed integration of the lithium-ion battery into the vehicle’s climate control system. This ensures that the battery always works at optimal system temperatures of between 15 and 35°C, which in turn makes it possible for the battery to provide long service life and maximum performance.

The main advantages offered by the newly developed lithium-ion battery are its very compact dimensions and its far superior performance compared to conventional nickel-metal hydride batteries. The weight/power ratio of the entire battery is 1,900 watts per liter (W/L). What’s more, the battery stands out by virtue of its high ampere-hour efficiency, long service life, and great reliability, even at very low temperatures. Its high level of safety is the equal of that provided by today’s auto batteries.

Lithium-ion batteries are ideally suited for use in hybrid vehicles to help reducing fuel consumption and thus also CO2 emissions. At the same time, the Daimler engineers are investigating to what degree this technology can be applied to other vehicle concepts, such as electric and fuel cell-powered cars.

S 400 BlueHYBRID — the world’s most economical luxury sedan

The S 400 BlueHYBRID consumes only 7.9 liters of gasoline per 100 km in the NEDC. This results in very low CO2 emissions of only 190 grams per kilometer, a very low value for this vehicle class and power class, making the S 400 BlueHYBRID the world’s most economical luxury sedan — unrivaled by any gasoline, diesel, or hybrid drive system offered by any competitor. And S 400 BlueHYBRID drivers will still enjoy impressive performance: combined with the hybrid module, the maximum output is 220 kW/299 hp, and the corresponding maximum torque is 375 Nm. The S 400 BlueHYBRID accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds on its way to an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h.

Even more potential is offered by the combination of clean BlueTec diesel technology with a hybrid module, a duo that is featured in the S 300 BlueTec HYBRID, for example.

Not quite official: Infiniti dealer posts FX teaser online

A certain sales manager from a certain dealership in Long Island was kind enough to take a little bit of the wind out of Infiniti’s sails ahead of its unveiling of the redesigned FX CUV. The detailed headlamp shot above was posted on an Infiniti FX forum (who knew?), and pretty much confirms the styling tweaks the new fascia will get, particularly when you imagine it on the set of spy shots we’ve seen already. The only thing that’s left to the imagination is the reconfigured rear end, which will likely sport some new tail lamps and a redesigned bumper. We’d be remiss not to point out that it’s not in the dealer’s best interest to include his name and contact information in his forum signature, lest Infiniti’s corporate communications folks come calling.

Thanks for the tip Jonathan.

Recalled Ford owners urged to get cruise control fixed

If you drive a Ford product built before 2005, do us all a favor and give your dealership a call. Ask them if your car or truck is one of the 10 million vehicles out there recalled for repair of a cruise control switch. Trust us, this is not something you want to ignore, as there have been fires, lawsuits, and deaths attributed to this issue.

Word from Washington is that federal safety officials are concerned as less than half of the recalled vehicles have been returned to dealerships for repair (come on people, we told you about this in August, 2006!). This has triggered a rare “consumer advisory” from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration who are urging motorists to take action. Ford is also re-notifying owners. The NHTSA is also quick to point out that there is no need to schedule an appointment for the repair as some dealers are even providing quick drive-through services for the fix.

The long list of recalled vehicles has been included after the jump.

First Ford Kuga Rolls of German Production Line

kuga-production-line-hl.jpg

Less than a week before the production Ford Kuga is scheduled to be presented for public review at the Geneva Motor Show, the first example has rolled off a German production line.

Ford’s Saarlouis production facility finished up the first of what the company expects to be around 45,000 Kugas per year. That would make the small crossover about ten percent of the German factory’s overall volume. Currently, the plant produces Ford’s European Focus, and C-Max.

Sales of the cool new Kuga are scheduled to begin (European only, don’t get any ideas America), in the summer of this year. Click on the galleries below to see a Kuga being born, they’re so cute when they’re little, or to see some official Ford images.
